Carrying the youngest of her four children, 22-year-old Nozamile Ndarah gathers wood to make the morning fire in the remote South African region of Lusikisiki. Nozamile has HIV and cares for her children alone, while her husband, who is also HIV-positive, works in a gold mine far from home. More than 26 million people live with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, more than any other region in the world. In South Africa alone, a thousand people die each day from HIV/AIDS. To help victims of the pandemic, Médecins Sans Frontières and the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched an antiretroviral (ARV) treatment program in Lusikisiki in 2003.
