Swim and Swirl Photograph by David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton
Swimming away from the camera at Midway Atoll, a nudibranch called Spanish dancer (Hexabrachus sanguineus)—for its bright red "skirt"—is a soft-bodied mollusk found in warm oceans round the world. Protected by the natural toxins it ingests as it feeds on sponges, it travels over the reef with elegant confidence.
