A Hawaiian native, the blacktail wrasse (Thalassoma ballieui) is especially abundant in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands around Midway Atoll and eats sea urchins, crabs, and small fish. Its Hawaiian name, hinalea luahine, means "old woman wrasse," perhaps because it swims in a slow curious fashion, idly snooping about the reef.
