How Stella Gets Her Groove On Photograph by Brian Lanker
Voted the Hostess With the Mostess by the Austin Chronicle, and Miss Congeniality and Miss Vivacious at two Ms. Texas Senior America pageants, Stella Boes dances every chance she gets during her shifts at the Carousel Lounge in Austin. She's been waiting tables at the club for 18 years, but dancing since she was "in the cradle." "Dancing keeps me in shape, it's my happiness, it's togetherness, and it puts smiles on people's faces." Depending on what the band plays, customers may catch her performing snippets of jitterbug, waltz, mariachi, Ukrainian dance, or Texas two-step. "I'm in another world when I dance. If I go on the dance floor, that's OK because that's when I'm happiest." (Read more about Stella in Field Notes.)
