Cosmic Explosions
MARCH 2007
|
A Massive Star Implodes Images by Don Dixon (top left); Robert A. Fesen, Dartmouth College, and James Long, NASA/ESA (bottom left and top right); Harvey Richer, University of British Columbia and NASA/ESA (bottom right)
Artists' impressions show what happens when a massive star explodes. The star (top left) runs out of fuel and collapses. The resulting explosion (bottom left) blew off the outer layers (top right), leaving the cloud seen in a telescope image (bottom right).
