Indian snake charmer Shisa Nath—of a famous semi-nomadic sect in Delhi, in which all share the Nath surname—prepares for a performance as his wife bakes chapatis behind him. Shisa’s orange clothing and puggaree (head scarf) are typical of Nath charmers. His wife says that making up his eyes with surma—a special homemade salve of ashes and herbs—will sharpen his sight and that surma used in cobra charming contains cobra venom. But, says University of Hawaii professor Lee Siegel—who has done extensive field research on snake charmers in India—“they tell you what they think you ought to hear rather than what they know is true.”
