Currents of Gold Photograph by Stephen Wolfe, Falls Church, Virginia
"The sun had retired," says Stephen Wolfe, who snapped this tranquil scene along the Potomac River. "I'd literally put my camera into its bag when I looked out one last time and saw a heron."
Photo Critique By Susan Welchman, Illustrations Editor
We liked this image because of the protruding rocks, the dark gray and golden tones, and the slow shutter speed blurred the moving water. The composition forces you to look at the picture from left to right, entering the rocks like the bird did. The moment is almost at peak action, with the heron just waiting for a fish to swim by.
