Secret Garden Photograph by Elijah Woolery, Monterey, California
"For me the color didn't matter so much," said Elijah Woolery of Monterey, California, when asked about his picture of a visitor entering a window at the Classical Chinese Garden in Portland, Oregon. "I wanted to emphasize form and action, which is why I converted the picture to black and white."
Photo Critique By Susan Welchman, Illustrations Editor
Except for the vines, everything in this photo is man-made: the suits, the opening, the tiles on the floor. You wonder why the man is wearing a suit. Is this really a park? The photo is just a little bit off; the photographer didn't shoot it straight on, which allowed him to capture the other person in front. That makes the first man seem like a mirror image of the second man.
