Parked for the Winter Photograph by April Douglas, Ottawa, Canada
"It reminded me of a fish bone that a cat might find in the garbage," says photographer April Douglas of a rack of bicycles covered in fresh snow. "But the scene was so beautiful, serene, and unusual, and looking straight down gave me a great perspective." Douglas shot the image from the 11th-floor balcony of the Ottawa apartment where she lived last winter. "That balcony allowed me to capture some of the most beautiful photos I've ever taken."

You first look at this and think it's bones on sand, but it's actually bikes in snow. The tree that's coming into the frame gives you a moment of confusion. At first, you can't tell what it is. Then, on closer inspection, you see that the snow has obliterated a lot of facts, and all you have to enjoy is the skeleton in the snow. It's a very beautiful, timeless picture with mostly white and just the smallest amount of grays and blacks.
