Sit, Stay
Photograph by Brenda Brown

"He wouldn't stand still," says photographer Brenda Brown, who grabbed this jowls-in-motion portrait of a bulldog named Angus—while Photo Camp instructor Susanna Frohman tried to catch Brown in action—during a pet-blessing ceremony at the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Brown, now 20, participated in National Geographic's Photo Camp last summer. "There were a lot of animals there," she says, "but I really liked his face."

Why Was This Photo Selected?
By Susan Welchman, Illustrations Editor

We wanted to start this series with something that would catch people's eyes. So there's a camera in this picture with a little flash going off, and it's aimed at the person shooting the photo. But there's a dog in the middle. You've got the person looking at the bulldog, but I don't think she even saw the other photographer shooting her. It's like two pictures in one. It's more complicated than the photographer intended. Listen to the full critique by clicking on the audio link above. (Macromedia Flash is required to hear the audio. Get the free plug-in here.)
